As fall eases its way over the Queen City, it is almost time, once again, for the Annual Alabama River Chili Cook-off.

The Ninth Annual Alabama River Chili Cook-off, hosted by Blackbelt Benefit Group (BBG), will take place Thursday, Oct. 22 from 5-7 p.m. at 1122 Water Ave.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, BBG has modified this year’s event to meet social distancing standards while still keeping the spirit of the Chili Cook-off alive during these strange times.

This year’s Cook-off will feature carryout meals prepared using Henry Brick’s “top secret” chili recipe, Henry brick was crowned winner of last year’s chili cook-off.

Meals include 32oz of Henry Brick’s award-winning chili, plus samples of chili from participating restaurants.

To stay true to the competitive nature of the Cook-off, the meals will also include score cards, just like those used by the contests’ judges each year.

After scoring the samples, participants can then submit their nominations via Facebook and a winner will be crowned.

“This year has proved to be a challenging one for hosting public events,” said BBG Executive Director Devon Gray. “We appreciate our community’s support as Blackbelt Benefit Group finds creative ways to make a difference and remain active as an organization.”

The cost of each meal will be $25 and an additional 32oz container of chili can be purchased alongside each family meal for $15.

Each year, BBG selects an organization to be the beneficiary of all proceeds collected from the event. This year, proceeds will benefit The Boy Scouts of America, Crane District.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at Carter Drug, The Coffee Shoppe, Gallery 905, Mark’s Mart and the Selma-Dallas County Public Library.
